Good, Crazy & Ugly Tattoo Reviews: Friday 12.13.24 (Ep. 15)

We're back again, Amigos!

In this week's episode of the Skin Deep Tattoo Podcast, NeighborN8 and I are joined by none other than @SpicoliTattoos to review the Good, Crazy and Ugly tattoos for the week of Friday, December 13th 2024.

Yes, today is Friday the 13th, and for the occasion, I have a special promotion going on in the shop.  Watch this YouTube Short to learn how you can get in on that deal.

In other news, some of you know that in a past career, I was actually a professional Chef and have a culinary degree.  I got pretty burnt out on restaurants and switched to tattooing over 30 years ago, but I never lost my love for cooking great food.  If you like food (most of us do...), then you might want to check out some of my new cooking videos on YouTube. Check out this new video on how to make Chimichurri and Smoked Beef Tenderloin with “Chef” Wes.

But enough of that. Let's get into the Good, Crazy and Ugly Tattoos for this week...

This week was a lot of fun, so grab your Monster Energy Drink of choice and push play on the video below. And, if you enjoy the show make sure to subscribe on YouTube or with your email. 🤘

Tattoo Podcast Show Notes & Links

Human Oil Painting: The Kraken Masterpiece [00:01:40]

We kicked things off with a bang, reviewing an astonishing Kraken tattoo that covers the canvas of a client’s neck down to their butt cheeks. The use of vibrant colors transitioning from darks to lights is utterly jaw-dropping. Dan “Wes” Wesley, Neighbor N8, and Spicoli all were in awe of the meticulous details and shading. This piece definitely had all of us thinking it looked like an oil painting on skin. Neighbor N8 loved the foam of the wave breaking over the butt cheek, adding a level of depth that’s tough to achieve (00:02:32).

Marble Madness: The Jar of Marbles Tattoo [00:04:12]

Next up, we reviewed a subtle yet complex piece - a jar of marbles. Let's be real: if someone asked you to tattoo a jar of marbles, where would you even start? Spicoli shared his deep understanding of the process, while Neighbor N8 marveled at the consistent, three-dimensional look of the marbles. The kicker? This intricate tattoo is just four to four and a half inches tall, done flawlessly on a bicep (00:05:19).

Doom Metal Delight: The Biomechanical Rat Tattoo [00:06:41]

Stepping into the realm of the bizarre, we dissected a dead rat with biomechanical guts pierced by a traditional Japanese katana. Certainly not your everyday ink, this tattoo had us questioning the mind behind the design. Spicoli noted how it reminded him of metal music-themed tattoos, all while appreciating how traditional, biomech, and Japanese styles were meshed into one cohesive piece (00:07:19).

Who Ordered the Rainbow Slinky Tattoo? [00:08:43]

This one’s for the books. A rainbow slinky tattoo complete with googly eyes? Yes, please! While it's undeniably one of the craziest tattoos we've reviewed, the design is genius in its simplicity and placement under the elbow, lending itself well to movement (00:08:43). Kudos to the artist who managed to fit such geometric complexity snugly under the client's elbow without making it look jumbled or painful.

The Monster Energy Goatee Tattoo [00:09:56]

Now, let's talk about the ugly. We all scratched our heads on this one. Is it a love for caffeine, a dare gone wrong, or simply an homage to a brand? Whatever the reason, this Monster Energy logo goatee left us baffled. Plus, we had to mention the surprise lipstick print tattoo, adding another layer to this inked disaster (00:10:04).

00:11:35 - The Botched Mufasa & Symba Back Portrait

And finally, nothing makes me cringe more than a poorly executed portrait. This one tops the list—a misplaced face on someone’s back that looked as confused as we felt (00:11:35). Neighbor N8 wryly suggested, "At least they went big. If you’re going to mess it up, might as well go all in." The bad ones are almost endearing in a tragic way, huh?
